Riding is certainly one of the most enoyable highlights of my life and I enjoy it immensely. Like you, I count the days until I can get back on and fire it up and hit the highway. I will, of course, try to pack in as many miles and smiles as is possible. Things are certainly going to be different this year where group riding is concerned but no matter what changes are made I will love every moment on that bike and every moment spent with the many great people and friends I have met and made in this club. I am looking forward to a year full of great riding and new adventures with you. I'm always up for a new adventure and another ride so if you have ideas let me know and lets make this year a great one and a safe one! New York City Council Pulls Motorcycle Noise Bill.

Late last week the New York City Council Committee on Public Safety held ahearing on Introduction No. 416 A titled; "A Local Law to amend theadministrative code of the city of New York, in relation to prohibitingthe parking of motorcycles equipped with straight pipes on the streets ofthe city of New York."

This bill gives law enforcement the ability to issue fines of $1000 andtemporary impoundment for the first infraction and a fine of $2500 andpermanent forfeiture of motorcycles with out EPA approved or stock exhaustpipes. The committee, Chaired by council member Peter Vallone a democratfrom Queens, did vote in favor of the bill which sent it on to beconsidered by the full council on week later.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is pleased to report that for now thebill has been pulled from the schedule for December 18th, when it was tobe voted upon by the full council.The MRF thanks Speaker Christine Quinn for realizing that this issuerequires much more than one week worth of consideration.

"This legislation raises far more problems than it solves" said JeffHennie vice president of government relations for the Motorcycle RidersFoundation. "What about older bikes that predate the 1979 clean air act ormotorcycles from neighboring states, just to name a few?" he added.

The Council will be entering the 4th and last year of the current 4 yearsession. So this bill is still live and could be considered at any pointduring the 2009 calendar year.The issue of motorcycle sound can be controversial and is certainly one ofthe most complicated of all issues related to motorcycles.

Revised: New York City Council unfairly targets motorcycle sound

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The New York City Council is about to give final approval to a bill that the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) says discriminates against motorcyclists and imposes severe, out-of-line penalties.

The AMA also complained that the measure languished in the Council for two years and then, in a surprise move, was revived just a week before the scheduled final vote, allowing little opportunity for public comment.

"This is outrageous. This is no way to operate in a democracy," said Imre Szauter, AMA government affairs manager. "The Committee on Public Safety considered the bill on Dec. 14, 2006, and then suddenly approves it and sends it to the full Council on Dec. 10, 2008?

"The measure, up for full City Council approval on Thursday, Dec. 18, would make it illegal for any motorcycle to be on city streets unless it has an exhaust system with a stamp that states it is approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Essentially that means the bike must have a stock exhaust system.

Motorcyclists caught without an EPA-stamped exhaust system would face fines of up to $1,000 for a first offense and temporary forfeiture of the motorcycle until the fine is paid. A second offense would result in a fine of up to $2,500 and permanent forfeiture of the motorcycle.

City officials apparently believe that requiring motorcyclists to have EPA-approved exhaust systems is easier to enforce than trying to prove a motorcycle exceeds the city's vaguely defined 80-decibel sound limit.

Szauter stressed that the AMA has long opposed excessive motorcycle sound and has funded information and public relations campaigns in support of quiet motorcycle use.

"The issue is that the New York City Council is unfairly singling out motorcyclists because motorcycles are the only vehicles covered under the bill," he said. "If New York City officials believe they have a sound problem, then the problem should be handled through the existing noise ordinance and not through piecemeal legislation targeting specific modes of transportation."

Szauter added that requiring motorcycles--and no other motor vehicles--to have a stock exhaust system is particularly discriminatory. When the muffler wears out or breaks on a car, the car owner can go to a local muffler shop and get an aftermarket system that costs much less than an original equipment system. The proposed New York City law wouldn't allow a motorcyclist to do that, forcing the motorcyclist to potentially spend hundreds of dollars more for an original equipment system, assuming that system is even still available.

"If a motorcyclist can't find a stock system, then the rider faces stiff fines and forfeiture of the machine, Szauter said. "These penalties are too severe and out of line when compared with other city laws."

Szauter urged all New York City motorcyclists to contact their City Council members immediately and ask that they reject this discriminatory measure.

If you joined after 10/1/08, then your dues are good till 12/31/2009, however, we still need a completed, signed, and returned form for your 2009 membership card. If you received a free membership for 2009 for having sold raffle tickets, we still need a completed, signed and returned form. You'll notice the pattern starting by now. As always, you MUST be a NATIONAL member in good standing to remain a local member. Mother HOG is big on signatures and forms...and without that, nothing else matters. You are on a side street, waiting at a stop sign wanting to make a left turn (southbound) onto the main road. You notice a car coming slowly in the northbound lane with it's right directional blinking, You quickly check the traffic the opposite direction, turn your head again and see the car still has its flasher on. You pull out to make your left turn when -BANG. All of a sudden you're thrown from your bike, you're laying on the ground with your left leg screaming in pain...............what the heck happened? Thought I would start to toss out a scenario from time to time on some safety related items for folks to think about.............So here's the first situation:

Someone is tailgating you in traffic. What would be your option if you excluded the following:

Giving them the finger is not an option.
Flashing your brake light has not affect on the driver.
The road is to narrow to pull over and shifting to the right side of the lane to allow the person to pass was a waste of time - he/she is still there.
Also throwing small solid objects over your head at them is a no-no.

What would your best defense be?

Hello my fellow HOG pie lovers-

It is Thanksgiving time already and that means that Jake's Boy Scout Troop is selling Apple Crumb and Pumpkin pies again. Each pie is $10.00 and well worth every cent. They are truly delicious and you will not be disappointed. Anyone who has had these pies in the past are always ready to order again the following year.

All pies are homemade by the scouts, their parents and friends of his troop. The weekend before Thanksgiving we all go apple picking from a local orchard that donates the apples, then to George Washington Elementary school cafeteria for apple peeling and pumpkin prep. Then we spend hours at Hannaford bakery in the Kingston plaza assembling and baking the pies. It's a long weekend but tons of fun as we bake over 1,000 pies. All pies will be ready for distribution on Sunday, 11/23 and Jake and I will personally deliver all pies.

Jake's troop (Kingston Troop 7) has been baking these pies for several years as a fund raiser. For each pie sold the scout receives $2.00 into an account to be used for scouting purposes. Jake's saving for a trip to the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia in 2010.

Although the sale goes on until 11/18, because there is a limit to how many pies the troop can make, the earlier you order our pie the better chance of them not being sold out.

Finally, his troop also sells Christmas Wreaths that the scouts decorate themselves. These wreaths are delivered 11/29. The prices vary by size so if you are interested you can contact me for pricing.

To the Members of Woodstock HOG,

As discussed at the October meeting, we made a collection from the members for a Rivet in the name of Steve Ehrle & Jillian Gartman. This was done for our members to be a part of their memory. This rivet will become part of the H-D Museum Park wall. The Rivet concept came to be for people to become part of Harley-Davidson. Rivets are design to connect things, and this would be a great way of connecting Steve and Jill to a passion they enjoyed as well as having a connection for us to them. We collected over $300 at the October meeting. Many thanks to all who donated and special thanks to Dave Guido for starting the fund with his donation of his 50/50 winnings.

I reviewed with Steve Ruschak about additional amount collected; since not every rider in our area is lucky enough to have the fantastic support like our members get from our Woodstock HOG Family, the additional funds would be donated to the AMA District 3 Injured Motorcyclist Fund in Steve & Jill's name to help those in their time of need.

All the information received for the Rivet (location, etc) will be forward to the Chapter Officers to keep on file for the members. If you would like more information about the Rivet program, you can head to the H-D website Harley-Davidson - Rivet

2009 HOG rally could add $1M to local economy

BINGHAMTON - If next year's New York State Harley Owner's Group (HOG) Rally brings in the crowds organizers hope it does, it could mean an extra $1 million or more for the local economy.

About 1,800 people attended this year's rally in Niagara Falls, and John Oleski, rally organizer for the 2009 event in Binghamton, says he hopes to top that number.

"We're hoping for at least 2,000 [people]," he says.

Since Binghamton is more centrally located, he says he hopes the event, scheduled for July 9-11 at the Binghamton University Event Center, will draw people from across New York, including New York City and Long Island, as well as from Northern Pennsylvania.

According to figures provided to Oleski by Harley Davidson Motor Company, "an average rally participant spends $256 per day, per person between lodging, food, and entertainment." That means people will spend, on average, between $600 and $700 during the entire three-day event.

Based on those figures, the Binghamton rally could generate anywhere from
$1.08 million to $1.4 million for the local economy, especially benefiting hotels and restaurants, Oleski says.

In fact, two different HOG clubs in the state have already booked hotel rooms for next year's rally, he says. "We've got 50 hotel rooms booked already."

The event is an annual promotional tool used by Harley Davidson to bring Harley riders together, Oleski says. Every state has its own rally, which not only provides a variety of events and entertainment, but also gives the host community a chance to show off what it has to offer.

Plans in Binghamton include spotlighting the carousels the area is known for as well as showcasing some of its "famous" foods such as spiedies, Oleski says.

"A lot of it is just to promote the area," he says. Other events will include a "parade of Harleys" and a bike show that will be open to the public in exchange for a charitable donation.

Along with bringing Harley owners together, the rally also serves to dispel myths about motorcycle riders, Oleski says. The rally is family friendly, he adds.

The rally, sponsored by the national HOG organization, will be marketed in a variety of ways, he says. Promotional fliers will be sent to HOG clubs across the state and into Pennsylvania. Harley dealerships will also be notified.

This is Binghamton's second time hosting the statewide event.

"We had the rally here, actually 20 years ago in 1989," Oleski says. "At the time, there [were] maybe 200 people."

Just a reminder, the Ladies of Harley shootout at the “H.O.G.” Corral is this Sunday, October 5th at Action Paintball located at Wood'n Wheel skating rink on 9W in Port Ewen. We’ll be meeting at 11:00 at the site which is located to the left of the skating rink building. We hope everyone that can, will attend even if you haven’t signed up beforehand. Don’t wear anything that you would be afraid to get “paint” on, however, it will wash out of most fabrics. Be sure to bring/wear a long sleeve shirt. I am Steve's sister. Thank for writing all the kind things about he and Jill. I am glad that I have had a chance to
read the beautiful postings on the Hog Blog and view many photos of the various events that he participated in.
As a kid he always loved the colored leaves and fall season. I agree that he would NOT have wanted any of the rides cancelled so.......... RIDE ON !!! Life goes on, as seasons change and he will always be in our hearts.

The rides for the rest of the year were 'officially' canceled, so this is not a 'club' ride. However, it is my personal opinion that this would not have been the wishes of Jillian & Steve. It would certainly NEVER be mine. I have spoken to many people concerning another ride and I received many thumbs up and many felt as I do. This ride will be in their memory. Steve and Jillian,
Jillian always knitting, on bus trips, meetings, wherever Jillian was there was knitting. Wherever Jillian and Steve were, there was laughter.
Steve with that big grin.
Steve would always rev his bike as he rode by our house to let us know he was there.
Now, every time we hear a bike go by we think of Steve and Jillian.
We were at the Wurtsboro Poker run, and Steve and I were looking at pins at one of the vendors.
We both saw the same pin and he was able to grab it before me. It was a 2002Woodstock Hog Poker Run pin.
I always kidded him that he stole my pin.
He gave me that pin for Christmas, I gave it back to him for his birthday.
Well he gave it back to me for Valentines day and claimed we were now going steady.
When I go to work I expect to see Steve driving up to a job site,
or walking into the office.
Steve and Jillian were, are, and always will be my friends.
I may not be able to reach out and shake their hand or give them a hug, but they will always be with me in our memories.

Seasons come and seasons go but we are never without one. Seasons, like people, come and go. Some stay longer, some are forced out by the changing winds. As we go through the seasons of our lives we will experience the loss of one and the rebirth of another. Life is about change, acceptance, hope, loss, and love. Our attitudes in life will depict how the many seasons affect us. It is always a loss when a loved one departs, especially someone who blesses and enhances our lives. There isn't one person I've met and come to know in this club that hasn't blessed my life in one way or another. There hasn't been one time where I didn't smile or thank God for the friends and great people I have met here. I am always grateful for the good hearts that surround and have befriended me. Steve and Jillian were part of the seasons of our lives, their presence and kindness left eternal imprints on our minds and hearts. Life is as precious as the winds the seasons bring into our lives and the many lives we touch along the way. Every day brings us closer to yet another season of laughter, joy, friendship, pain, and love. Whatever the seasons may or may not bring, I know I am filling every one with as much life, joy, and happiness as possible, in my life and the lives of those around me, for we never know when the changing winds will take us away, but until then, I will never be without a season...

I love this country. I love my life here. I love my wife, she loves me. I have great friends, a nice home, 3 cats that greet me every time I walk in the door. I have a job that is tailored to my needs (and my need to constantly move around) and I like what I do.I don't mind paying taxes. I have good neighbors and live on a street with a funny name. I cannot remember a time where I woke up in a bad mood. I appreciate my life and ALL that I have in it. The glass is ALWAYS half full in my world, there is no reason for it to be half empty. I have unbridled optimism. The sun shines for me 24/7. I do not live in a third world country or under a dictatorship, I live in AMERICA, a place where I can live as I do, where I can prosper and feel free to do as I please. I appreciate ALL the people who have fought, suffered, and died so I can live as I do. My appreciation is extended to those that risk their lives every day to protect me and who will be there should I ever need them. I am VERY blessed and HONORED, to be just one person among the almost seven billion, FORTUNATE enough (I don't believe in luck) to be living where I am in a place and country I LOVE with some of the BEST friends and people on the planet. There is NO place in my world for misery, miserable people, negativity, or pessimism. I have bad moments not bad days. So I finally watch this show online. Folks promoting the show to the crowd at H-D's 105th told us that this show would put Bikers in a good light - equal to how the Shield work for cops (????? with that statement). Anyway, the show was OK. It had its entertainment value, but as for putting Bikers in a good light - WRONG.
